DR RON EDWARDS (1936-43)
Ron Edwards started his education at Moldgreen Council School, where his father was Caretaker. After seven happy years at Almondbury Grammar School (then the traditional name for King James's Grammar School), he obtained his B Sc in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Leeds. He then joined the research department of Metropolitan-Vickers in Manchester during which time he took an external M Sc, followed by a Ph D at Durham University.

After 11 years at Metropolitan-Vickers, he became Works Manager of Metro Cutanit Ltd and later Managing Director of Plansee Tooling Ltd at Grappenhall, near Warrington. He undertook further development work in Austria before retiring in 1990. Ron died in April 2014.

Ron is the author of Cutting Tools (The Institute of Materials).

Ron Edwards still treasures a copy of a handwritten reference (right) supplied by the recently retired Taylor Dyson. Dated Dec 5th 1945, it reads:

"I write on behalf of Mr R Edwards with every confidence and pleasure.

"He passed through Almondbury Grammar School, Huddersfield during my Headmastership and proved himself an outstanding student and leader.

"He spent several years in Form VI specialising in Maths and Science and after taking the higher School Certificate went on to Leeds University. Others will be able to speak of his University Career with more authority but I have watched his development with great interest.

"At school his character stood very high and he was deservedly popular with masters and boys alike. He served the school well as Prefect and House Captain and took a prominent part in all our activities.

"I recommend him completely and wish him well."
